What is the purpose of infrared coagulation (IRC)?
Infrared coagulation (IRC) is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids. IRC involves placing a small probe that emits infrared light against the hemorrhoid tissue. It induces localized coagulation (clotting), which leads to scar formation and thereby shrinks or eliminates the hemorrhoidal tissue.
How is IRC performed?
- IRC is performed in the office without anesthesia.
- You'll lie on your left side as the gastroenterologist inserts the IRC probe through an anoscope into your rectum to apply infrared light to the hemorrhoid columns.
- It is a brief procedure, usually with minimal or no post-procedure discomfort.
What preparation is required for an IRC procedure?
There is no special preparation for an IRC procedure.
What happens following the IRC procedure?
Most patients feel no discomfort afterward and resume normal activities right away.
